Practice Value

Break the physiological loop of anxiety and stress by tuning into internal sensations (interoception).

What to Expect

  • A full body scan takes about 3-5 minutes.
  • No competition or scoring; just honest observation.
  • May bring suppressed emotions to conscious awareness.
  • Ideal for moments of stress, emotional turbulence, or before sleep.

Practice Suggestions

  • Find a quiet, private space; closing your eyes enhances focus.
  • If any sensation feels too overwhelming, open your eyes or stop.
  • Approach every feeling with curiosity and kindness; no judgment.

Fun Observations

  • "A weight on my chest" is more than a metaphor; it's a real neural defense pattern.
  • Naming an emotion (labeling) significantly lowers amygdala activity and calms the mind.

FAQ

  • Why don't I feel anything in my body? This is often 'dissociation.' Under chronic stress, the brain disconnects from the body to protect itself. Start with obvious signals like temperature.
  • My feelings don't match the map, am I wrong? Not at all. The map is a statistical average. Your history and body are unique; trust your own felt experience first.
  • What do I do after I notice a sensation? Awareness is the first step of healing. You can use deep breathing or muscle relaxation to release specific tensions.

1. What is Body Awareness?

Body Awareness, also known as Interoception in psychology, is the ability to tune into your internal bodily sensations.

The body often reacts before the conscious mind does. By improving body awareness, we can bypass the brain's defense mechanisms and access the true emotional state.

2. The Emotion-Body Connection

Emotions are primarily physiological responses. When an emotion is triggered, the Autonomic Nervous System immediately mobilizes bodily resources.
